The beginning of the new year is a good time to focus on industry forecasts and to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past 12 months. In 2019, we observed internal changes and the continued maturation of the PR industry itself. One significant event in this context is the new format and development of PSPR, aimed at effectively integrating our community. It is worth mentioning especially the reactivation of the Public Relations Ethics Council, which confirms the growing awareness regarding maintaining ethical standards in our industry. The prestige and essence of PR are also increasing, as evidenced by the introduction of this category into Effie.
PR itself and the PR profession are evolving towards holistic, integrated communication. Consequently, the PR professional is gradually becoming a one-man band with broad competencies, not only versed in their “native” field but also in SEO and SEM, social media communication, and influencer marketing. No excuses. The PR profession requires continuous acquisition of knowledge, information, and staying up to date. And yes, a big surprise not only for those in our industry was the news from the last quarter of the past year, namely the disappearance of Marquard Media press titles from the market. This shows how ruthless the contemporary media market is.
As for channels and tools, in 2019 we could observe the first attempts of brand communication on TikTok. For many, this is still an unknown, exotic land, but the coming months will certainly bring increased company activity on this platform. On the other hand, companies understand influencer marketing increasingly well. This category continues to grow at a very impressive pace, and more and more entities are hiring individuals or even creating entire departments solely responsible for executing activities in cooperation with influencers. Fortunately, after the initial “infatuation” with influencers and fumbling efforts, we are seeing increasingly thoughtful and quality campaigns carried out in collaboration with creators. Podcasts are, of course, a tool that has strongly emerged in recent months. The next year will surely bring their further triumph—as seen in Western markets, there is still plenty of room to grow here.Events and topics that were prominent in 2019 include:
- Parliamentary elections. Traditionally, they caused a buzz, but we did not see spectacular twists. Politically, little changed, maybe except the return of the united left to the stage. Besides that, we continued to observe societal polarization. Worryingly, there was a further increase in hate speech and a plague of fake news. This is a huge challenge, especially for political marketing experts as well as all PR specialists, particularly in the context of the upcoming presidential elections.
- Promotion of Poland on the international stage, mainly in relation to culture. This of course primarily refers to the Nobel Prize for Olga Tokarczuk, but also to the writer’s impressive speech. Another topic that engaged a large part of society was the premiere of the series “The Witcher” on the Netflix platform. Although it divided Sapkowski’s fans, it undoubtedly breaks viewing records and, right after the game, becomes another carrier of information about Polish literary achievements. We are keeping our fingers crossed that an Oscar for “Corpus Christi” will join the list of recent cultural successes.
- Eco topics. It is pleasing that CSR is no longer a trend or merely a necessity to survive in business. The past year has shown that the debate around nature protection and climate change is socially and business-wise important, evoking real, credible engagement among an increasing number of people and companies. It is worth noting the involvement of young people and their face and voice in the form of Greta Thunberg. The situation is very serious, so the coming months will certainly bring further efforts to fight the climate crisis and further scope for communicating this issue. However, it is impossible not to mention greenwashing, which unfortunately also “occurred” in brand communications in recent months. This is, of course, nothing other than deception riding the wave of “green” communication.
10 years of Good One PR and the opening of a branch in Wrocław
Podsumowując 2019 rok nie mogę pominąć tematu rozwoju naszej agencji. W ubiegłym roku świętowaliśmy 10-lecie grupy marketingowej Good One, w tym agencji Good One PR.
W planie wydarzenia m.in. prezentacja ćwiczeń, wykład dietetyka na temat żywienia osób starszych i debata nt. aktywizacji seniorów Polsce, w której udział wzięli: prezes Krajowy Instytut Gospodarki Senioralnej, członek zarządu Funtronic, v-ce przewodniczący zarządu Polskie Stowarzyszenie Pomocy Osobom z Chorobą Alzheimera, prezes Fundacja OPUTW oraz dyr.
